The City Council of Louisville, Kentucky just passed an ordinance prohibiting “NO KNOCK” warrants within the City of Louisville.
The death of Breonna Taylor is a tragedy. Louisville narcotics officers served a NO KNOCK warrant on a drug dealer, but served it at the wrong house. Taylor’s boyfriend opened fire when the officers made entry and the agents returned fire killing Taylor.
The politicians either are unaware or unconcerned about the risk of entry into a drug house or a person wanted for a violent incident. The element of surprise substantially reduces the risk of injury to both the officers and the people inside of the residence. Giving advance notice allows those inside to arm themselves and the results will likely be tragic.
Human beings make mistakes and some of those will have tragic results, but to ban a necessary tool is a knee-jerk reaction which will, at some point, result in the death of one or more law enforcement officers and the City Council will be responsible for those death(s).
Hopefully the citizens of Louisville will recognize the danger that the City Council has placed Louisville Metro Police under and will elect people who will support the inherent danger in serving warrants.
