Ever since the high-profile arrest of a professional golfer in Louisville, Kentucky, there has been a hue and cry from both sides of the story.
Louisville Metropolitan Police announced disciplinary action against the officer who was allegedly dragged a short distance by the vehicle driving by golfer Scottie Scheffler for failing to activate his body worn camera during the incident. They released to the media footage from a vehicle camera and a camera on a pole nearby. Both videos show nothing of any value as to what actually happened, but the demand for answers forced the agency to show as much transparency as possible.
Sheffler was on his way to play in the second round of the PGA Championship tournament at Valhalla Golf Club. He claims that he received instructions on how to bypass traffic control measures to drive into the entrance of the club and was unaware that police had shut down the roadway while they investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian who was struck by a tour bus.
Scheffler was charged with one felony of Assault on a Police Officer and three traffic infractions. The officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries allegedly suffered in the confrontation.
Sheffler was processed into the Jefferson County Jail but was released in time to make his tee time for the tournament. His case was turned over to the Jefferson County Commonwealth Attorney and his next court appearance is in June.
Had this not been a celebrity, there would have been little or no interest in the event as it was not really newsworthy. But this made national and international news with demands that the charges be immediately dropped and that all video of the incident be released.
