Eldrich (Tiger) Woods did not leave Augusta Golf Club with a new green jacket but he definitely left a winner. Woods was involved in a horrific traffic crash in February, 2021 and there was serious discussion about amputation of his leg. In fourteen months, Woods entered the Masters Tournament and walked the seventy-two holes when the United States Supreme Court said he would be allowed to ride in a motorized cart in order to evenly compete with the rest of the field. The fact that he showed up was remarkable; the fact he made the cut to play the weekend was remarkable; and the fact that he walked all eighteen holes for four straight days is remarkable. He definitely left the course a WINNER.
What it taught the rest of the mere mortals is that perseverance, determination, and grit can overcome almost anything. Woods does not need accolades. Woods does not need money. Woods has nothing left to prove that he is one of (or is) the best golfer to ever play the game. He obviously has the advantage of being able to afford the support staff to keep him able to recover at the end of each day.
Having the drive to come back from a setback is what separates people. Woods proved that it can be done. Congratulations Tiger Woods. A golf analyst on CBS Sports announced that Woods set a tournament record for most standing ovations for a player. The crowd support was overwhelming and Tiger made sure to acknowledge the love of the mass of people who came to watch great golf.
